- Study experimental physics, Utrecht University (graduated December 1981).
- 1981-1985
- PhD-work performed at the FOM-Institute for Atomic & Molecular Physics, Amsterdam. PhD-thesis entitled: “New physical processes for silicon solar cells”. Promotor: prof.dr. F.W. Saris. (PhD obtained from Utrecht University in December 1985).
- 1986-1987
- Post-doc position at Hitachi Central Research Laboratory, Tokyo, Japan. Research topic: structural properties of amorphous silicon.
- 1987-1990
- Project leader at the FOM-Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics, Amsterdam. Direct responsibility for the work of 7 PhD-students and a number of master students. Research topics: processing, characterization and modeling of crystalline silicon solar cells, structural properties of amorphous silicon, laser-induced deposition of metals.
- 1990-1995
- Section leader R&D Solar Energy at the Netherlands Energy Research Foundation ECN. Direct responsibility for the work of 20 people in the field of processing, characterization and modeling of crystalline silicon cells and of monitoring of grid-connected systems.
- 1996-1998
- Group leader Solar Energy at the Netherlands Energy Research Foundation ECN. This Group consists of a Section Cells & Modules (35 people) and a Section PV System Technology (10 people). Responsibility for the R&D program and the strategy in the field of photovoltaics. Assistant to the unit manager in strategy development in the fields of solar and wind energy, and implementation of renewables in the built environment and developing countries.

- Program unit manager Solar Energy at the Energy research Centre of the Netherlands ECN. Responsibility for program, strategy, and business development on photovoltaics science, technology, and applications (≈50 f.t.e.).

- 1992
- Jacob Kistemaker Award of the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) for complete work on fundamental properties of crystalline and amorphous silicon and on multicrystalline silicon solar cells.
- 1998
- NOZ-PV Award of the Netherlands Agency for Energy and the Environment (Novem) for important contributions to the creation and development of the Dutch PV research and implementation program and for education of two generations of PV experts.
- 1999
- 1999 Royal Dutch/Shell Prize for Sustainable Development and Energy 1999 for integral scientific and technological work on solar cells and for important contributions to the development and implementation of R&D and market introduction programs for photovoltaic solar energy.
